Pre and Post Bariatric Program
Weight Management Partners is pleased to offer diet help to patients who are considering, preparing for, or have completed bariatric surgery.
Contemplation of Surgery
Perhaps you have considered surgery but are not sure if it is right for you. Dr. Berkeley is happy to explain surgical options, risks and benefits to eligible patients. Bariatric procedures are appropriate for selected patients who have a BMI of greater than 40, or BMI of 35 with co-morbid conditions (like high blood pressure and diabetes).
The decision to have bariatric surgery is complicated. Dr. Berkeley can provide personal referrals to surgeons she knows and trusts. If you should decide to opt for surgery while in our program, we will try to facilitate the process for you and make it as easy as possible.
Many insurance companies require that patients show a good faith effort to lose weight in a medically supervised program prior to granting approval for surgery. Weight Management Partners is happy to treat patients who are contemplating surgery. In fact we have found that some patients lose so much weight in our program that they decide to forgo surgery.
Should you decide to go ahead with surgery, you should know that weight loss of about 30 pounds prior to procedure is preferred by most surgeons. Surgery can be complicated by excess fat and by fatty liver. Our program will allow you to lose the amount of weight that your surgeon recommends.
Unfortunately, bariatric surgery does not guarantee permanent weight loss. We are highly experienced with reversing regains in patients who have had bariatric surgery in the past. OPTIFAST is an optimal product for providing maximal nutrition in a small volume. This is helpful for post surgical patients who are adapting to a smaller stomach size as well as for those who want to lose additional pounds.
In some cases, bariatric surgery programs do not provide post surgical dietary information and support that is easy for you to access. Our dietitians are happy to work with you to create the best diet for you after your surgery and beyond.
